After picking up only one win from their previous nine Ligue 1 fixtures (D4, L4), Marseille secured a much-needed three points with a 2-0 victory over Rennes on Sunday, a result which lifted them to ninth in the table. Manager Gennaro Gatusso, who has overseen seven league games (W2, D2, L3) since taking the job in late September, was clearly relieved post-game and said the only important part of the evening was “winning the match”.
The Italian now has a great opportunity to record back-to-back wins as bottom-of-the-table Lyon travel south to the Orange Vélodrome on Wednesday evening in this rearranged ‘Choc des Olympiques’ after the original fixture was postponed when the Lyon team bus was attacked pre-match. And L’OM ought to fancy their chances of doing so given they are one of only two sides unbeaten at home in Ligue 1 this season (W4, D2).
Lyon arrive on the south coast with their third manager this term, Pierre Sage, in charge, and with only one victory (D4, L8) across their Ligue 1 campaign so far. Fabio Grosso was sacked last week after only nine games at the helm, but interim boss Sage was unable to turn things around on his first outing as Les Gones went down 3-2 at Lens on Saturday, despite going 1-0 up for only the second time in 2023/24.
There are at least shoots of recovery for Lyon, who had picked up their first three points of the season against Rennes prior to defeat against Lens in their next away outing, with their three goals scored in those two games three times more than their seasonal travelling goal tally before then. However, there is still a huge job to do for whoever takes on this project to try and keep Lyon in Ligue 1, a level they have played at since 1989!
Players to watch: Marseille’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has come to life at home in the last two games with a European hat-trick against Ajax on Thursday and the opener against Rennes. Lyon defender Jake O’Brien is another player in strong scoring form after getting both goals at Lens and grabbing the winner in the 1-0 win at Rennes as well!
Hot stat: Lyon have led at half-time in only one of their 13 Ligue 1 matches so far this campaign (HT: W1, D7, L5).
